Sousse, Tunisia
We headed to Tunisia for a week during the May half-term, hoping to soak up some guaranteed sunshine and were not disappointed! We’ve done our fair share of holidays in Europe around this time of year and been unlucky with the weather a few times so, we figured North Africa would be a safer bet and Tunisia caught our eye. Neither Scott or I had been before, despite it being right next to one of our all-time favourites — Morocco. Plus, it’s just a quick hop from the UK and there are quite a few family-friendly hotels on the beach to choose from.

We flew directly from Birmingham to Enfida-Hammamet (NBE), and stayed at the Jaz Tour Khalef, a 5-star hotel in Sousse. This place came highly recommended on Tripadvisor and it looked perfect for kids. Sousse is one of Tunisia’s top spots for a holiday, boasting a 10-kilometre stretch of golden sand that’s hard to resist. Sousse, on Tunisia’s east coast, was a great pick because it’s only a short drive from the airport, plus it has its own port and medina. We thought exploring the medina would add a bit of culture to our trip (and it totally did!). We are big fans of Morocco so we couldn’t resist the opportunity to explore an ancient medina.
The hotel itself is set in beautiful, landscaped grounds with lush lawns and palm trees. The rooms were spacious, spotless, and had lovely walk-in showers. We were on the ground floor with a big balcony overlooking the garden, but many rooms have stunning sea views.
The three swimming pools offered something for everyone. The main “adult” pool was a huge, stylish infinity pool with in-water loungers, which was the hub of daytime activities. The other was a large family pool split into separate pools of different depths, with two water slides for the bigger kids, a toddler pool with smaller slides and a shallow baby pool with a mini slide. There was also an indoor saltwater pool and jacuzzi within the massive on site spa. We spent a whole morning in here with the kids and pretty much had it to ourselves and the kids absolutely loved it.
During the day, the kids were happy to be either by the pool or the beach with us. I joined in with a Zumba and step class by the pool side, which was good fun and had great music! We didn’t catch much of the evening entertainment because the kids were usually wiped out after dinner, but there was always live music followed by a mini disco. We didn’t use the kids’ club, but we did spend some time in the small sandy playground, which had swings (big hit!). The kids also had a blast making cookies outside the snack bar one afternoon.
One day, we took a taxi into central Sousse to visit the ancient mosaic museum, which was well worth it. The mosaics were incredible, and the entrance fee was super cheap. The museum was almost empty, and there was a lovely rooftop garden with views of the medina, which the kids enjoyed exploring (even though it was pretty hot!). We found a little restaurant nearby with good reviews on TripAdvisor, where we tried a traditional Tunisian pastry dish called ‘brik,’ along with salad, fresh bread, fruit juice, and mint tea. The rooftop view of the bustling streets below was a great bonus, and we had the place to ourselves. Our friendly taxi driver picked us up at the agreed time and took us back to the hotel, which worked out perfectly. I’m really glad we took the time to explore outside the hotel.
